Free nutritious grab-and-go meals to children and families in need during the COVID-19 crisis

On March 17th, Real Food for Kids and Chef David Guas of Arlington’s Bayou Bakery, Coffee & Eatery joined forces to form Chefs Feeding Families, an initiative to provide healthy meals to children and their families during the school shutdown. School meals are a vital resource to low-income families in normal times, critical to preventing hunger and malnutrition with a reliable daily offering of balanced nutrition. School closings and job losses associated with the COVID-19 pandemic have escalated the need for healthy meal options for vulnerable children and families in our communities.

In the first ten days, we distributed over 1,700 meals from Bayou Bakery and received overwhelming interest from other chefs and restaurants to expand Chefs Feeding Families to reach additional areas of need across the region. With our friends at Silver Diner and Pizzeria Paradiso, we are launching two additional operations in Maryland in April.

For more information on the Chefs Feeding Families initiative, please click here for our Press Release.

Children and families in need may stop by one of the Chefs Feeding Families locations listed below to pick up a grab-and-go meal, no questions asked.  No ID or proof of need is required.  Family members may pick up meals on behalf of their entire family – children do not need to be present.  Meals will be served during the below-listed timeframes, while quantities last.

Each meal served through the Chefs Feeding Families initiative aligns with Real Food for Kids' mission to increase access to healthy, whole foods for all children. These free meals are intended to complement the emergency meal distribution being implemented by local public school districts throughout the D.C. metro area.

To uphold the safety of the food served, each restaurant partner will be following CDC recommendations for preparing and serving food, as well as precautionary measures beyond already strict health and sanitation practices to give families in need a nutritious meal.

We will post updates on our Facebook page if we are unable to serve meals due to changing circumstances. For more information, please email

Real Food for Kids: Chefs Feeding Families is a joint project with Washington, D.C., metro-area restaurants to provide nourishing grab-and-go meals to school children and their families impacted by closed schools to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Co-founded by Chef David Guas of Bayou Bakery, Coffee Bar & Eatery in Arlington, Va. and Real Food for Kids, Chefs Feeding Families provides funding for food, supplies, and restaurant staff to feed as many families as possible and create employment opportunities within the restaurant community also impacted by COVID-19 closures.
